Paragliding at the Tapalpa Base
The flying experience
In recent years Tapalpa has been overlooked by many pilots, who have gone straight to Valle de Bravo instead. The one’s who have flown Tapalpa can’t see why. They say Tapalpa has great flying, the site doesn’t tend to blow out over lunchtime like it does in Valle, and the infrastructure can’t be beaten. Local buses stop at launch and cost very little, and you can sleep and eat near the two main take-offs, which are on either side of the main road.
Situated at an altitude of over 2200 meters (7000 feet), the launch site offers pilots stunning views of the surrounding mountains and text-book cross country conditions. With moderate winds and thermals that keep you in the air for hours, you’ll be able to explore this area at your own pace.
Pros: This flying site has been the scene of important competitions and has received the headquarters of the PWC (Paragliding World Cup) twice. It has restrooms, a great restaurant service and all the necessary infrastructure to make your flying day enjoyable and easy.
For the XC pilots, there ere are varied cross-country routes flying through the mountains, until your reach Lake Chapala.
Tapalpa
On top of the mesa like mountain lies the town of Tapalpa. It is one of Mexico’s “Pueblo Mágico”, or magic towns, and it is easy to see why. The streets are cobblestone and the walls are painted. There are no supermarkets or fast food joints, and each business is a single room if not a street stall, even in the center of town. Tapalpa means “Place of Colored Land” in Otomí. This place is known for its forest landscape and beautiful white houses with red rooftops. You will find the occasional horse promenading down its narrow cobblestone streets, white washed buildings sheltered by scarlet shingled roofs, a bucolic town square surrounding its stunning old cathedral; all set in a valley engulfed by towering pine laden mountains.
Cross-Country:
- A classic is to follow the mountain ridge that extends 20 mile north and come back (the ridge also extends 10 miles south of the launch)
- Another classic is to rise above launch and try to reach Tapalpa 10km west, or anywhere west of the launch, that they call "the plateau".
Launch and landing info
Hanggliding:
Excellent place to do some XC with your hangglider. Its about 60km to fly to Sant Marcos, just be aware of the current Airspace restrictions. Launch is possible from La Ceja or from Gravidad Cero. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DGoQIYjBdI]
Launches:
Thanks to our buddy Bryan we can share this about the Launches:
Two main launches next to each other (5-10 min walk) separated by a road.
1. Gravidad Cero:
- Hight: 2207 Meter (Landing hight: 1226 meter)
- Setup: Nice large grassy area. 3-4 people can easily setup at the same time (lined up to launch). A lot of space in the back too.
- Wind: Works with NE, E, and SE wind (ideally East wind)
- Contacts: owner/manager: Miguelon from Gravidad Cero (+52 33 12108174: initially found the number online under his tandem business so I assume it’s ok to share but I can confirm with him)
- Fees: 150 Pesos per day
- Video of the Launch: [https://drive.google.com/file/d/1T9iBa5-t1H7sEb1qtqr-Eja1DlTxLL0f/view?usp=sharing]
2. La Ceja:
- Hight: 2207 Meter (Landing hight: 1226 meter)
- Setup: a lot more cramped, you can have two people set up at the same time but barely. (will send pics). A lot busier: lots of tandems there on the weekend, while barely any at Gravidad Cero. Due to the tighter space, the crowd and the presence of a powerline further down after launch, this is considered a bit more technical and not recommended to beginners.
The site also has a restaurant and a camp site.
- Wind: Works NE, E, SE, but also works when wind is a lot more south. So for SE, S it is the advisable launch.
- Fees: 75 pesos per day (or so I was told).
What is exciting about this place?
Characteristic Mexican town visit (It is one of Mexico’s “Magic Towns”!), with good food, combined with some really good thermal conditions.
Is it beginner friendly?
This place is suitable for any level of pilot. Just take into account that it can get pretty strong on hot days. If you doubt your skill level, contact Papalotes and take their guidance. The “La Ceja” launch is a bit more technical and is not so suitable for beginners, better use the “Gravidad Cero” launch.

What are the local regulations?
Pilot Licence:
You need at least a P3 to be able to fly here independently.
Know before you go
Launch fees:
Both launch sites charge fees. Somewhere around 75 (la Ceja) -150 (Gravidad Cero) pesos a day.
Weather:
- Very strong thermal conditions in hot days.
- The wind will often be East in the morning and switch West late morning to early afternoon. You can't launch with west wind so timing is important.
- In the summer (rainy season) be careful with fast changeable weather.
- In the winter the afternoon often blows out in the afternoon, many are on the ground by 2 or 3pm.
Landing:
- Official landing zone: • Official Piano Landing
- While XC and landing east of the launch: preferable to land north of the piano landing or south starting a bit before the town of Sayula.
- Between the piano landing and Sayula, the land owners) are no longer welcoming. Landing is possible but I was told to quickly pack and leave if that were to happen.
- Landing between the main road (401) and the railroad is always OK.
- Top landing is possible at los Papalotes (they have a windsock high on a tree) - be careful in the afternoon, the whole area can be really active with dust devils.

Climate and Weather
When is best to go fly here?
You can fly all year around in Tapalpa, but most pilots consider November to March to be the best season to fly. With June and July being the worst due to the rain season. However, others have suggested that the Spring is best, and that despite the rain the summer months are also really good to fly. We recommend the spring for Cross-Country fanatics, and find the summer quite unpredictable and fast changing weather while you fly.
Winter (December to February) is the dry season, and conditions are generally stable with clear skies and light winds, which is ideal for paragliding. It's one of the best times to fly because the winds tend to be calm and predictable, with cooler air contributing to nice lift.
Spring months (March to May) are excellent for paragliding due to the increasing thermal activity. The conditions are typically calm in the mornings and early afternoons, with moderate to strong thermals starting in the late morning and peaking in the early afternoon.
Summer (June to August) is the rainy season in Tapalpa, but rainfall tends to be in the form of brief, intense afternoon showers. The morning and early afternoon hours are often flyable, with good thermals, but you need to be prepared for quick changes in weather, especially around the afternoon. The winds can also become stronger in the late afternoon, making it a bit trickier to fly.
Fall (September to November) is another great season for paragliding in Tapalpa. The weather tends to stabilize after the summer rains, with calmer conditions in the mornings and thermals becoming reliable in the early afternoon. Temperatures start to drop, and the risk of rain decreases as the dry season approaches.
How are the flying conditions?
Although generally not too turbulent, the flying conditions can sometimes be quite strong here, and the thermals occasionally a little tricky to work, especially on the hot days. This requires active piloting and if you are just new out of school than you can better take some guidance from the local school in Tapalpa first.
Thermals and Lift:
Due to Tapalpa’s elevation, thermals are generally strong and provide good lift for cross-country flights, especially in spring and summer. The cool mornings and warm afternoons create ideal conditions for soaring, which is why this area is popular with experienced paragliders.
The altitude also means that pilots can access higher flight paths more quickly, giving them more opportunities for extended flights.
Wind Conditions:
Winds are generally light and manageable, but they can pick up in the late afternoon, particularly during the summer months. Early mornings typically offer the most stable conditions, with light winds that allow for smooth launches and landings. Stronger winds during the late afternoons and especially in the rainy season can lead to turbulence, so pilots need to be cautious, especially if venturing out for longer flights.
Note: The wind will often be East in the morning and switch West late morning to early afternoon. You can't launch with west wind, so timing is important.
Rainfall:
The rainy season can limit flying opportunities, particularly during the afternoon when thunderstorms can develop. These storms often bring gusty winds and turbulence, so paragliders usually avoid flying when these weather patterns are imminent. However, mornings are typically rain-free and provide excellent conditions for flying.
Flying in Winter in Tapalpa:
The dry and cool winter conditions are often the best time to paraglide, with consistent weather patterns, little to no rain, and optimal thermals. The cooler air helps pilots gain altitude more easily and stay in the air for longer periods. The relatively calm winds also make for smooth flying conditions.
Note: The wind will often be East in the morning and switch West late morning to early afternoon. You can't launch with west wind so timing is important.
What is the temperature like?
Tapalpa is located in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, and is known for its temperate climate, which makes it a great destination for paragliding. The town sits at an elevation of about 2,000 meters (6,600 feet) above sea level, which contributes to its cooler and more stable weather conditions compared to lower altitudes in Mexico. Prepare for chilly nights, especially during the winter months.
Daytime temperatures typically range from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) during most of the year. Summer temperatures can be higher, particularly in the afternoons, but it rarely gets unbearably hot.

How to get there?
By air to Guadalajara Airport, and then by bus or car from Guadalajara to Tapalpa, which takes appr. 1.5 hours, about 120 Km. You can rent a car at the airport from national car rental. Tapalpa village is about 20 minute drive from the launch, and the road up to the launch site is all paved, so you can drive there.
By Car
From Guadalajara, take the quota road to Colima (54-D) or the free 401 before the town of Acatlán de Juárez... If you use the quota, take the right in the direction of San Miguel del Zapote, which is the exit also to Atoyac, (the exit is identified as "Atoyac" and "Tápalpa"), when you arrive at the free road # 401, turn left, to the cruise of the road to Tápalpa. ( Highway # 436). The flight area is located before reaching the town, indicated by a sign of the “Zero Gravity Club”.
By Bus
If your option is by Bus, the Line that takes you to Tápala from Guadalajara is "South of Jalisco". You can take the Bus in module 2 of the New Bus Station. You can also take the bus on Avenida López Mateos, after the cruise of the periphery before Ciudad Bugambilias. To get to La Ceja, ask the bus operator to get off at "Las Antenas".
